Full Length Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)

Also known as full-body or full-length UT inspection, is a state-of-the-art non-destructive testing (NDT) method specifically designed for Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) — such as casing, tubing, and drill pipes used in oil and gas drilling operations. This advanced technique scans the entire length and volume of the tubular, providing comprehensive coverage that goes beyond spot checks or end-only inspections.

Key Benefits of Full Length UT for OCTG Inspections

100% Volumetric Coverage
Unlike partial or zonal inspections, full-length UT examines the complete pipe body (including the ID, OD, and wall thickness along the entire length), detecting internal and surface defects with no blind spots. This ensures thorough evaluation of the tubular’s integrity from end to end.
Superior Defect Detection
Highly sensitive to a wide range of flaws, including cracks, inclusions, laminations, stringers, hook cracks, wall thinning, corrosion pitting, seams, laps, and manufacturing imperfections. It identifies even small discontinuities that could lead to catastrophic failure under downhole pressures.
Enhanced Safety and Risk Mitigation
By providing accurate defect mapping, sizing, and location data, full-length UT helps prevent blowouts, leaks, or pipe failures in high-stakes drilling environments. It supports informed decisions on pipe acceptance, rejection, or repurposing, reducing the risk of non-productive time (NPT) and environmental incidents.
Improved Operational Reliability and Cost Savings
Inspected pipes offer higher confidence in performance, allowing operators to select the thickest or highest-burst-rated sections for critical applications. It extends pipe life through early detection, minimizes the need for premature replacements, and supports tally optimization—ultimately lowering costs compared to ordering new tubulars (which can involve long lead times and high expenses).
Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance
Aligns with industry standards (e.g., API specifications for OCTG inspection) by delivering repeatable, traceable results with minimal human bias. Advanced systems (often using phased array or automated setups) provide detailed reports, including wall thickness maps, OD/ID measurements, ovality, eccentricity, and defect characterization for precise fitness-for-service assessments.
Efficiency and Productivity
Modern full-length UT systems enable high-speed, automated inspections with excellent repeatability and signal-to-noise ratios, making them ideal for both new manufacturing and field/re-inspection of used tubulars. This reduces downtime and supports faster turnaround without compromising accuracy.
Mobile On-Site Convenience
Self-contained units deploy to your yard, rig, or remote location, cutting transport costs, logistics hassle, and downtime.
Nationwide Reach
Rapid response across the U.S. (Permian, Rockies, offshore support, and beyond)—no geographic limits.
