CMT Duraband on PH6 Tubing

We offer the Industries Most Used CMT Hardbanding Wires

Superior Wear Protection and Tool Joint Longevity
Duraband NC offers exceptional resistance to abrasion, galling, and severe wear in open-hole and challenging drilling conditions. Its microstructure (hard, tough nano-composite matrix) protects the tool joint effectively, extending drill string life significantly compared to unprotected joints.
100% Crack-Free Application
Duraband is engineered to apply without cracks (when proper procedures are followed), reducing risks of flaking, spalling, or crack propagation into the tool joint. CMT’s controlled, low-heat process further supports this by minimizing thermal stress and distortion.
Casing-Friendly Performance
It significantly reduces casing wear (often by protecting against metal-on-metal friction), as the smooth, non-cracking deposit avoids trapping abrasives. This extends casing life and lowers overall operational risks.
Improved Application Quality with CMT

–CMT provides:

  • Lower heat input and reduced penetration → Less distortion, warping, or weakening of the base metal (tool joint).
  • Higher deposition rates → Faster welding, improved productivity, and better buildup efficiency.
  • Smoother, more uniform deposits → Cleaner results with minimal spatter, enhancing aesthetics and performance.
Reapplication and Cost Efficiency
Duraband NC is rebuildable; it can be applied over itself or many prior hardbandings without removal or special prep, cutting reapplication costs. CMT helps maintain base metal integrity during reapplications or repairs (e.g., on rebuilt workstring tubing).
Overall Operational Advantages
Combines Duraband’s extreme durability (e.g., high hardness/toughness for prolonged service) with CMT’s precision to minimize downtime, repair needs, and costs in demanding environments like horizontal drilling or sour gas wells.

Ultra-High Wear Resistance and Tool Joint Protection
Arnco 400XT delivers top-tier durability and longevity (often described as having the best wear resistance in its class, comparable to or building on predecessors like 300XT). It significantly extends tool joint life under abrasive conditions, reducing replacements and downtime.
Non-Cracking / Crack-Free Deposit
Engineered to apply without cracks (when procedures are followed), minimizing risks of spalling, flaking, or propagation into the base metal. CMT’s low heat input further reduces thermal stresses, helping maintain this crack-free integrity and preventing distortion or weakening of the tool joint.
Excellent Casing-Friendly Performance
Provides superior protection to well casing by reducing abrasive wear and metal-on-metal damage. The smooth, uniform deposit (enhanced by CMT) avoids trapping debris, lowering casing wear rates and supporting safer, longer casing life in cased-hole sections.
Enhanced Application Quality via CMT
CMT offers:
  • Lower heat input and minimal penetration → Less base metal dilution, reduced heat-affected zone (HAZ), no warping/distortion, and preserved mechanical properties of the tool joint.
  • Higher deposition rates and faster welding → Improved productivity, quicker turnaround, and efficient buildup without sacrificing quality.
  • Cleaner, smoother deposits with low spatter → Better aesthetics, more consistent bead profile, and potentially improved friction characteristics downhole.
Reapplication and Compatibility Advantages
Arnco 400XT shows good compatibility for reapplication over itself or select other alloys (e.g., Tuffband NC, Duraband NC, TCS-8000). CMT supports clean reapplications by minimizing base metal damage during removal/prep or direct overlay.
Overall Cost and Operational Efficiency
Combines 400XT’s proven extreme durability with CMT’s precision to cut repair frequency, extend service intervals, and lower total ownership costs—especially valuable in high-wear scenarios like horizontal/extended-reach drilling.

Exceptional Wear Resistance for Non-Magnetic Tools
Provides 400%–500% better abrasion resistance than conventional non-mag alloys (e.g., 310 SS) and drill collar base materials. This extends tool life dramatically in abrasive drilling conditions, reducing premature wear, damage, and replacements—critical for costly non-mag components.
100% Crack-Free Deposit
Engineered to apply without any cracks (when procedures are followed), eliminating risks of spalling, flaking, or crack propagation into the base metal. CMT’s ultra-low heat input minimizes thermal stresses, distortion, and heat-affected zone (HAZ) issues, further ensuring crack-free integrity on heat-sensitive non-mag substrates.
Non-Magnetic Compliance with Superior Performance
Meets magnetic permeability specifications for MWD/LWD and directional drilling tools (where magnetic interference must be avoided). Unlike basic non-mag hardbands, Ultraband NM combines this with much higher hardness and toughness—starting at ~40 Rc and work-hardening in service to ~50 Rc—for prolonged durability.
Multi-Layer and Reapplication Capability
Can be applied directly onto non-mag base materials or over previous layers of 310 stainless (or similar) without spalling or special prep. Engineered for multiple layers and rebuilds, cutting reapplication costs and downtime. CMT supports clean, low-dilution overlays, preserving base metal properties during reapplications or repairs.
Enhanced Application Quality via CMT
CMT delivers:
  • Minimal heat input and low penetration → Reduced risk of base metal weakening, warping, or magnetic property changes in non-mag tools.
  • Higher deposition rates and efficiency → Faster application with better productivity.
  • Smoother, uniform, low-spatter deposits → Cleaner bead profiles for consistent performance and easier inspection/grinding.
Casing-Friendly Characteristics
Features spherical microstructural elements (no sharp edges/points) that reduce aggressive casing wear, making it suitable even in mixed-string operations where tool joints contact casing.
Overall Operational and Cost Advantages
Protects high-value non-mag tools from severe wear, minimizes non-productive time (NPT), and lowers total repair/replacement costs in directional, horizontal, or extended-reach drilling. The CMT combination is highlighted for protecting non-mag tools while leveraging innovative low-heat procedures.

Advantages of CMT Hardbanding vs. Conventional CV Hardbanding

  • Significantly Lower Heat Input — CMT generates much less heat (often cited as ~1/3 to 1/10 of conventional MIG/CV in similar applications) due to its “hot-cold-hot-cold” cycle: the wire retracts during short circuits, detaching droplets with minimal current. This reduces thermal stress, distortion, warping, and weakening of the tool joint base metal (critical for maintaining mechanical properties and avoiding cracks in heat-sensitive alloys).
  • Minimal to No Dilution and Smaller Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) — Lower penetration and dilution preserve more of the hardbanding alloy’s intended microstructure/hardness (e.g., nano-composite or carbide phases in Duraband/Ultraband/Arnco). CV processes can cause higher base metal melt-in, diluting the overlay and potentially reducing wear resistance.
  • Crack-Free Deposits with Greater Reliability — Hardbanding wires like Duraband NC, Arnco 400XT, and Ultraband NM are designed to be crack-free, but CMT’s controlled low-heat process minimizes residual stresses and thermal cracking risks—even on non-mag or high-alloy substrates. This supports consistent 100% crack-free applications and multi-layer reapplications without issues.
  • Reduced Spatter and Cleaner Deposits — CMT achieves up to 99% less spatter compared to standard dip-transfer MIG/CV, resulting in smoother, more uniform beads with better aesthetics and performance. Less cleanup/grinding is needed, and deposits trap fewer abrasives (enhancing casing-friendliness).
  • Higher Deposition Rates and Productivity — Despite lower heat, CMT often allows faster travel speeds and higher wire feed rates for efficient buildup, shortening application time on tool joints while maintaining quality—valuable for high-volume drill pipe hardbanding shops.
  • Better Base Metal Integrity and Reapplication Ease — Lower heat preserves tool joint preheat/post-weld properties and reduces risks during repairs or overlays (e.g., applying new hardband over old without full removal). This aligns with industry emphasis on low-heat techniques for tubular protection.
  • Improved Overall Performance in Demanding Environments — The combination leads to longer-lasting hardbands (better wear resistance retention), reduced casing wear (smoother profiles), and lower operational costs through extended tool joint life, fewer reapplications, and minimized downtime/non-productive time (NPT).
